Thomas Demand

Thomas Demand is a conceptual artist that I became very interested in recently and knew that I wanted to create something inspired by his practice for this project because it seemed so fitting for the ideas that I had. He is well known for his detailed and complex 3D models of politically and historically significant places from paper, an example of this being the hotel room where L. Ron Hubbard wrote 'Dianetics'. After taking photographs of his models, he destroys them which adds another interesting element to his pieces. I was drawn to the fact that from a distance you might not even notice at first glance, but when you take a proper look, things start to feel off and this is when you figure out that they are made from paper. As I planned to make 3D models of places that are significant in Britain's Queer history, I thought that paper would be a good medium to try (after some trial and error with other mixed media). I wanted to make models of these places and take photographs of them to bring awareness to the importance of these places now to this day, and to raise more awareness about them.
